The history of Make-up

The first findings of use of make-up dates back to around 3000 BC from Ancient Egyptian times. They would use soot and natural ingredients to paint their faces and they had specialized tools to apply their make-up (a bit like us today)

In Ancient Rome woman of all statues would wear make-up and they were not viewed a pretty if they didn't wear make-up. Cosmetic use in Rome covered all areas of the body, including perfumes. Cheap cosmetics started to appear and these would be used by prostitutes would wore excessive amounts.

By the 19th century make-up began to take a turn, it was being used for fashion and acting. French Manufactures started to produces the first industrial made lipsticks, actors would require make-up that would be appropriate for black and white films. The sales of cosmetics began to rise in the 1900s.

The hippie movement began in the 1970s. Majority of the female hippies preferred feministic natural look of their faces during the day, they would wear very natural looking make-up. However, Bright red lips, long red nails, eyelid makeup, and pencil thin eye makeup were all based on the fashion of Italy and France. During those years, magazine Vogue was the centre of European fashion.

Top Makeup and Wigs from TV/Film...

My top 5 Make-up looks are...

Freddy Krueger (Played by Robert Englund) from A Nightmare on Elm Street. The realistic burns created by David B. Miller made me fear falling asleep after seeing this film at the tender age of 8 years old.

(Aileen Left, Charlize as Aileen Centre and Charlize Right)
Aileen Wuornos (Played by Charlize Theron) from Monster. It's hard to believe the transformation of Charlize into Aileen, not only is it one of my favourite realistic transformation but the film itself is one of my favourites the make-up was created by Toni G with help from Art Sakamoto to create Aileen Wuornos famous teeth.

Regan (Played by Linda Blair) from The Exorcist. I have seen this film too many times to count and it still freaks me out and it's down to the make-up, as Regan's "demontic state" progresses the make-up becomes more intense, all created by Dick Smith and his assistant at that time Rick Baker.

The Sawyer Family from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. What a charming family photo...reminds me of The Breakfast Club. The make-up was created by Tom Savini and he really did make this family look completely crazy, wouldn't want to be invited to their house for a cup of tea.

The Grinch (Played by Jim Carrey) from The Grinch. A film that melts my heart ever Christmas time, but seriously the make-up for The Grinch is fantastic and it was created by Rick Baker (yes, the assistant make-up artist for the film The Exorcist!)

Top 3 uses of wigs for TV/Film

Considering the fact Corey Stoll is bald, his wig looks great in The Strain which makes him look younger.

Jessica Lange's wig is so stiff which is perfect for her role of Elsa Mars on American Horror Story: Freakshow.

Pretty sure I had a haircut similar to David Bowie's wig in the Labyrinth, I mean honestly what a look!

Perfect365 Make-Up Review

Perfect365 is a make-up editing app on the iPhone and Android that is amazing for applying different makeup looks on a photo of yourself or enhancing a photo of yourself with make-up on, you can soften the skin, contour the face to make it look slimmer, and change the hair.

Beauty Products to live by

The beauty product my group agree that we all love was The Sleek Eyebrow Kit which costs £8.49 from Superdrug. Although this is costly to some it does last a long time and I personally think it is worth the money and it lasts all day.

As a class we the beauty product we agreed one was Simple Moisturiser which costs £1.95 in Superdrug which is a good deal as it usually costs £3.99. This is good to use before applying foundation in the morning and after removing make-up to hydrate the skin.

College thoughts so far...

1. What were your expectations on starting the course?
I honestly didn't know what to expect when starting the Media Make-Up Course, I didn't expect hair to be a massive element of the course.

2. What are your initial thoughts on West College Scotland and the Media make up course?
I know that the college was my local college and it always had a good reputation, so far I feel like I've eased well into the course, everyone who is doing Media Make-Up although we all have different personalities we all love make-up and all the girls are friendly which is a good atmosphere.

3. What is your funniest moment of college life so far?
Having cheap and cheerful instant face lifts when doing the wig wraps, honestly don't want to look at cling film for a good couple of months though.

4. What is the most interesting thing you have learned or learned how to do so far?
Creating bruises and burns, it's easier than what I expected and I love the messy, gory side of things.

5. Who is your make up idol?
Jamie Genevieve is just fantastic at make-up, and I would love to leave college and become as successful as she is becoming.

6. Why do you want to be a MUA?
I've always wanted to work in film either acting or as a make-up artist, I love horror movies and halloween, so I would love to become a special effects make-up artist for big films and TV shows.
